Instrumental music is clearly underrepresented in popular music. Mostly, you would assume, because the idea of the golden, vocal hook has become such a selling point and one of the keys to mainstream success. So it’s surprising that those artists that would never claim to be about mainstream commercial radio airplay (even if it was open to them) still put such focus on having a lead vocal, loud and centre in the mix of their recordings and having a ‘front person’ sing at you live. All other art forms will leave interpretations up to the audience and rest upon the unspoken aspects of their work.
Obviously a great lyric is not to be swept aside, but those certainly aren’t in the majority. You need to know what you are doing, which is why we shouldn’t discourage new musicians from taking the instrumental option. Even the most inarticulate tween can squeeze some kind of communicable intent out of an instrument. It is a level playing field.
This is what works for this track. Two guys with every bit of the stadium rock intent of their seasoned rock colleagues but the added excellence of having no filter, no expectations and probably no money.
And, whether due to limitations or by design, the good sense to have no lyrics.
